Guide

A plain-language primer on citation, retrieval, and the vocabulary your agency is about to start using.

The category shift, in one paragraph

For most of PR's modern history, the job was to get coverage in front of a human reader, who then decided what to think. That model assumed a person was doing the reading. Increasingly, the first — and sometimes only — interaction a buyer has with your category is an answer an AI engine generated on their behalf, built from a narrow set of sources the model decided to trust. Coverage that never enters that source set produces zero visibility in that moment, regardless of how prestigious the outlet was.

Why this snuck up on comms teams specifically

Marketing and SEO teams have been adjusting to AI-mediated discovery for a while, because search traffic is a number they watch daily. PR doesn't have an equivalent daily instrument, which is part of why the shift landed on comms teams later and harder — the metrics that would have shown it (share of answer, AI citation rate) simply didn't exist yet in most reporting stacks. The vocabulary is new because the measurement is new, not because the underlying change is new.

The four terms worth actually knowing

AI Citation Score: how often an outlet gets pulled into AI-generated answers for a topic — a different signal than traffic or domain authority. AI Influence Score: the same idea applied to an individual journalist, based on how often their specific articles get cited. Share of answer: your brand's presence in AI-generated answers for category questions, tracked the way share of voice tracks earned coverage. GEO / AEO: Generative Engine Optimization and Answer Engine Optimization, two names circulating for the same discipline — earning inclusion in AI answers the way SEO once earned inclusion in search results. Expect the two terms to keep colliding for a while.

What to actually do with this on a Monday

Nothing about pitching mechanics changes — you still research, personalize, and send. What changes is which outlets earn the research time: the ones AI engines are actually citing for your specific topics, not the ones with the biggest legacy readership. And what changes in reporting is the second number on the slide, next to the one the board already expects.
